New Species Friday

New Species Friday

Ever wondered what the longest living sharks species is?!?! Let me help you out a little bit.

Published in the journal, Science, a study conducted on Greenland Sharks was released on August 11, 2016. Greenland Institute of Natural Resources analyzed multiple sharks of this species and found one to be 272 years old! Apparently the female Greenland Sharks don't even mature until they are 150 years old. The scientists behind this study discovered their ages by counting the layers developed around the lens within the sharks eyes, kind of like counting rings on a tree stump but more like removing layers around an onion. From discovering more about the Greenland Shark, scientists are worried about the changing water temperatures and habitat for this slow aging species because of the cold and deep environment that they live in.

I have attached a few links below to assist you in your further adventures in learning about the Greenland Shark species.
